Yes, a sunscreen with higher SPF blocks more UVB — just not much more. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of the sun's burning rays, a 50 about 98%, and a 100 about 99%. The number that actually gets people burned isn't on the bottle: it's the dose. Studies show most of us apply roughly a quarter of the amount sunscreen is tested at, which drags every SPF far below its label. A higher SPF is genuinely worth it for long, intense sun days and skin that burns fast. For everyday wear, a properly applied SPF 30 has you covered.
That's the whole answer. The rest of this post is the math, the catch, and the part where we admit something that mildly hurts our own business.
What Sunscreen With a Higher SPF Actually Buys You
SPF is a ratio, not a grade. Formally, it's how much more UV radiation it takes to burn skin wearing the sunscreen versus bare skin, measured in a lab at a precise dose. A label reading 50 means protected skin can take 50 times the UV before burning. Which sounds like it should demolish an SPF 30. It doesn't, because the fraction of UVB that sneaks through is 1 divided by the SPF, and that curve flattens out fast.
Run the math up the shelf. SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UVB. SPF 30 blocks about 97%. A 50 gets you to 98%, and a 100 to 99%. You triple the number on the bottle, and the protection moves two percentage points. Sunscreen marketing departments would prefer you never see this chart.

Is an SPF of 100 twice as good as an SPF of 50?
Depends which end of the telescope you look through. Blocked UVB: 99% versus 98%, a rounding error. Transmitted UVB: 1% versus 2%, which means half as much UV actually reaching your skin. That second framing is the honest case for high SPF, and it's not nothing — over an eight-hour beach day, halving the dose your skin absorbs is a real difference. But both numbers assume you applied the full test amount. Almost nobody does. Which brings us to the actual problem.
The Real Problem: You're Probably Wearing SPF 8
Every SPF on every label was earned at 2 mg of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin. That is a lot of sunscreen. A peer-reviewed review of sunscreening agents puts real-world usage at about a quarter of that dose, and protection doesn't degrade politely when you skimp — it falls off a cliff. Apply a quarter of the tested amount and your SPF 30 is performing somewhere down in single digits. That triple-digit bottle isn't living its best life either.
The fix is boring and free. The American Academy of Dermatology's benchmark is about one ounce for your body — picture a full shot glass — and roughly a teaspoon for your face and neck, reapplied every two hours or after swimming or sweating. Now the part that costs us. We make exactly one sunscreen, and it's SPF 30. If you know yourself, and you know you apply sunscreen like it's saffron, a higher SPF buys you a margin of error that ours can't. An under-applied 70 can still land somewhere near a proper 30. An under-applied 30 lands in the teens. We'd rather teach you the shot glass, because a full dose beats a big label every time — but the math doesn't check who makes your sunscreen, and we're not going to pretend it does.
When Higher SPF Is the Right Call (and When It Isn't)
The Skin Cancer Foundation's guidance splits it cleanly: broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher for daily incidental exposure, 50 or higher for extended time outdoors. That tracks with how UV actually adds up. A ski trip at altitude, a day on the water with light bouncing off every surface, medication that makes your skin extra sun-reactive, or skin that goes pink in ten minutes flat — those are higher-SPF situations, no argument from us. Why does our sunscreen stop at SPF 30?
Chemistry, mostly. SPF Only Grades Half the Test
Here's the quiet flaw in the whole higher-SPF argument: SPF measures protection against sunburn, and sunburn is mostly a UVB story. UVA is the other band — it penetrates deeper, pushes through clouds and window glass, and drives a lot of the visible aging you'll notice twenty years from now. It doesn't announce itself with a burn, so SPF barely grades it. A sky-high SPF with weak UVA coverage can lose to a broad-spectrum SPF 30 on the wavelengths that age you. Does a higher SPF mean I can stay in the sun longer?
No. SPF is filter strength, not a time allowance. Every sunscreen from SPF 15 to 100 needs reapplying about every two hours, and sooner after swimming or sweating. Treating a big number as a hall pass is exactly how people burn while wearing a 100.
What SPF do dermatologists actually recommend?
Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher for daily wear is the standard advice, and the Skin Cancer Foundation suggests 50 or higher for extended outdoor days. No credible source recommends chasing the biggest number on the shelf over applying a proper amount of any of them.
Can you still tan wearing a high SPF sunscreen?
