We get a lot of questions about tallow skincare — which makes sense, because most people grew up thinking skincare had to come from a lab. Turns out, the best moisturizer might have been on the farm this whole time. Here are the questions we hear most often.
About Tallow Skincare
What is beef tallow skincare?
Beef tallow skincare uses rendered grass-fed beef fat as the base for moisturizers and other products. Sounds weird? Fair. But here's the thing — tallow has a fatty acid profile remarkably similar to human sebum, the oil your skin naturally produces. People used tallow for skincare for thousands of years before the petroleum industry introduced mineral oil and synthetic ingredients in the early 1900s. We're not inventing something new. We're bringing back something that worked all along.
Does beef tallow clog pores?
Tallow is rated 2 on the comedogenic scale, which means it has a low likelihood of clogging pores. For context, coconut oil — everyone's darling — is rated 4. Most people find tallow far less likely to cause breakouts than the "natural" oils they've been using. If you have very acne-prone skin, we always recommend a patch test first, but the vast majority of our customers use it daily without any issues.
Is beef tallow good for acne?
Many people report improvement because tallow supports the skin barrier without disrupting your natural oil balance. It's not a treatment for acne (and we'd never claim it is), but it doesn't aggravate breakouts for most people. The key is that tallow works with your skin rather than against it. Want to go deeper? We wrote a whole post about it: Can Tallow Help With Acne?
Does it smell like beef?
Nope. Properly rendered grass-fed tallow has a very mild, neutral scent — nothing like a burger. Our products are lightly scented with natural ingredients like vanilla, lavender, and citrus, or available completely unscented if you prefer. You will not smell like a steakhouse. We promise.
Is this FDA approved?
Our moisturizers and soaps are classified as cosmetics, which don't require FDA pre-approval — same as every moisturizer and soap on the market, from the drugstore to the luxury counter. Our sunscreen is a different category: it's compliant with FDA monograph regulations for OTC sunscreens, which means it meets the same safety and efficacy standards as any sunscreen you'd buy at the store.
How long does a jar last?
Most customers get 2–3 months from a 4oz jar with daily use. A little goes a long way — your skin absorbs tallow efficiently because of its similarity to human sebum, so you don't need to slather it on like you're frosting a cake.
About Our Sunscreen
What SPF is your sunscreen?
SPF 30. That's the sweet spot recommended by dermatologists for daily use. It blocks about 97% of UVB rays, which is genuinely solid protection — especially when you're not coating yourself in synthetic chemicals to get there.
Does your sunscreen leave a white cast?
Minimal. Our tinted Travel Tube version has a light cocoa tint that reduces white cast significantly. The tin version may leave a very slight cast that blends in after about a minute. Either way, it's nowhere near the ghost-face effect you get with most mineral sunscreens.
Is it reef safe?
Yes. We use non-nano zinc oxide only — no oxybenzone, octinoxate, or other reef-harmful chemicals. Your skin and the ocean both deserve better than that stuff.
Is it water resistant?
Water resistant for up to 80 minutes. Reapply after swimming or heavy sweating, just like you would with any sunscreen.
Can I use it on my face?
Absolutely. It's formulated for both face and body. Some customers actually prefer it as a daily face sunscreen because it doesn't feel heavy or greasy like a lot of mineral options.
About Baby Products
Is tallow safe for newborns?
Yes. Our Baby Momma Cream is fragrance-free and made with minimal, gentle ingredients. Many parents use it from day one. When you think about it, tallow is just rendered animal fat — one of the simplest, most time-tested skincare ingredients on the planet. No fragrance, no essential oils, no complicated chemistry.
Can it help with eczema?
We can't make medical claims (and wouldn't want to — that's not how we operate). What we can say is that many parents report it helps soothe dry, irritated patches. The fatty acids in tallow support skin barrier function, which is often compromised in eczema-prone skin. We've written more about this: Tallow and Baby Eczema.
Does Baby Momma Cream have fragrance?
Zero. None. Completely unscented. We kept this one as simple as possible because baby skin doesn't need anything extra.
Ordering & Shipping
Do you offer free shipping?
Free shipping on orders over $30. We kept the threshold low because nobody should have to add a bunch of stuff to their cart just to avoid a shipping fee.
Do you ship internationally?
Currently US only. We know that's a bummer for our international friends, and we're working on expanding. Stay tuned.
What's your return policy?
Simple: if you're not happy, reach out to us. We'll make it right. No fine print, no runaround. We're a small business and we actually care whether you like what you bought.
Will my tallow melt in summer shipping?
It can — and that's totally normal. Pure grass-fed tallow is real food fat with no synthetic stabilizers, so when it rides in a hot delivery truck (sometimes over 100°F), it can soften or fully melt. It is NOT spoiled and it works exactly the same. Just let it cool on the counter at room temperature, or pop it in the fridge for about an hour to firm it back up. (If you wouldn't eat it, don't wear it — and real food melts in the heat.)
