Quick Answers: Natural Sunscreen, Demystified
What makes a sunscreen “natural”?
A “natural” sunscreen relies on mineral filters — zinc oxide or titanium dioxide — instead of chemical UV absorbers like oxybenzone, avobenzone, or octinoxate. Eat My Face SPF 30 uses non-nano zinc oxide as its only active ingredient (21.6%), in a base of grass-fed beef tallow and recognizable plant oils. Twelve inactive ingredients total, all organic. If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t wear it.
Is mineral sunscreen better than chemical sunscreen?
Mineral sunscreens sit on top of the skin and reflect UV. Chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin and convert UV to heat. The FDA has called out 12 chemical filters as needing more safety data; only zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are currently classified as Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective (GRASE). For sensitive skin, kids, pregnancy, or anyone who just doesn’t love absorbing filters they can’t pronounce, mineral wins.
Is zinc oxide reef safe?
Non-nano zinc oxide is the only UV filter allowed under Hawaii’s reef-safe sunscreen law and similar bans in Key West, Aruba, Palau, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Our SPF 30 contains 21.6% non-nano zinc oxide and zero oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene, or avobenzone — the four chemical filters linked to coral bleaching.
Why use beef tallow in a sunscreen base?
Tallow’s fatty-acid profile is unusually close to the lipids your skin already makes. That means the base is doing double duty — carrying the zinc and giving you a real moisturizer, not just a chalky filler. Plus tallow holds onto antioxidants like vitamin E better than water-based formulas, so the bottle stays stable without synthetic preservatives.
Will tallow sunscreen leave a white cast?
Honestly? A little, but way less than you’d expect. We tinted the formula with a touch of organic cacao powder so it blends warm instead of ghostly. On the inner-forearm swatch (photo above) it disappears in about 20 seconds of rubbing. On very deep skin tones it can read slightly warm — trade-off we make for skipping nano particles and chemical filters.
How often do I reapply?
Same rule as any sunscreen, mineral or chemical: every 80 minutes if you’re swimming, sweating, or toweling off, and at minimum every two hours of sun exposure. The tube format is built for this — throw it in the beach bag and reapply without making it a whole thing. Always follow the Drug Facts label on the package.
How EMF SPF 30 Compares
Most "natural" sunscreens drop the chemical filters but still rely on water-based emulsions, synthetic preservatives, or seed-oil carriers. Here's how the EMF tube stacks up against the typical conventional drugstore SPF and the typical "natural mineral" SPF.
| EMF SPF 30 Tube | Typical "natural" mineral SPF | Typical drugstore chemical SPF | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active ingredient | 21.6% non-nano zinc oxide | Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide | Oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinoxate, etc. |
| Carrier base | Grass-fed beef tallow + organic plant oils | Water + synthetic emulsifiers | Water + synthetic emulsifiers + silicones |
| Total ingredients | 13 (all organic) | 20–30 | 25–40+ |
| Edible-grade? | Yes — every ingredient food-grade | No | Hard no |
| Reef-safe (Hawaii law) | Yes | Usually yes | No |
| Synthetic fragrance | None | Sometimes | Usually yes |
| Tinted (no ghostly cast) | Yes — cacao powder, subtle warm tint | Usually no | Sheer (chemical filters) |
"Natural mineral" reference reflects mainstream zinc-oxide sunscreens sold at health-food retailers. "Drugstore chemical" reflects the most common formulations using oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinoxate, or octocrylene as primary filters. We're not naming specific brands; ingredient profiles speak for themselves.
What the Experts (and Real Buyers) Say
We don’t make medical claims about sunscreen — the FDA does that, and our Drug Facts label is the source of truth. But here’s what board-certified dermatologists have actually said about the ingredients we use, and what real customers report after using this exact tube.
“[Tallow is] an effective barrier repair product, helping to reinforce the skin’s armor, trap moisture, and soften the skin. [Its fats] mimic the skin’s natural lipids.”
Dr. Adam Friedman, MD — Professor and Chair of Dermatology, George Washington University School of Medicine, quoted in National Geographic
“Tallow is mostly made of fatty acids found in the skin’s natural barrier. That similarity is why some people believe it can help moisturize dry skin.”
Dr. E. Victor Ross, MD — Director of Laser and Cosmetic Dermatology, Scripps Clinic Carmel Valley, quoted on Scripps.org
“Beef tallow contains fatty acids, such as stearic acid and oleic acid, that can provide moisturizing and hydrating properties to the skin.”
Dr. Angela Wei, MD — Cleveland Clinic Dermatology, in Cleveland Clinic Health Essentials
And from people who actually bought the tube
“This sunscreen is unique compared to other sunscreens on the market. It is nothing but clean, wholesome ingredients… the moisturizing shea and cocoa butter is very hydrating.”
Dara Frandsen — verified buyer, 5★ review on this product
“This product lasts longer than we expected. The tube is much preferred over the tin can. Two tubes lasted the summer for us.”
Sharon Kerns — verified buyer, 5★ review on this product

Why beef tallow sunscreen works better than synthetic SPF
Most sunscreen makes you choose: protect your skin, or coat it in a chemical soup of UV filters. Beef tallow sunscreen doesn't play that game. Ours pairs 21.6% non-nano zinc oxide — a mineral active that sits on top of your skin and reflects UV — with grass-fed beef tallow that matches your skin's own lipids. SPF 30, broad-spectrum, no oxybenzone or octinoxate.
That's what makes this a true reef-safe, edible-grade tallow sunscreen: the only thing between you and the sun is zinc and clean fat, not a lab full of ingredients you can't pronounce. It ships in a travel-friendly 4 oz squeeze tube that's easy to spread on faces, kids, and the rest of you.

Is beef tallow sunscreen reef-safe?
Yes. Our SPF 30 uses 21.6% non-nano zinc oxide with no oxybenzone or octinoxate — the chemical filters restricted under Hawaii and Key West reef-safe laws — which is why it qualifies as reef-safe.
How to use
This travel-ready sunscreen tube makes reapplication clean, quick, and easy.
1. Squeeze & warm. Squeeze a generous amount onto your fingertips. Rub between your palms for a few seconds to warm and spread evenly.
2. Apply generously. Smooth evenly over all exposed skin — face, neck, ears, and body. For full SPF 30 coverage, use about two finger-lengths for your face and a golf ball-sized amount for your body.
3. Let it set. Give the sunscreen a minute or two to absorb and form its protective layer before heading outside.
4. Reapply often. Reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming, sweating, or toweling off. Water resistant for 80 minutes, but no sunscreen lasts forever.
5. Don't skip overcast days. Up to 80% of UV rays pass through clouds. If you're outside, you need SPF — rain or shine.
Tips:
- A little goes a long way. Start with less and build up coverage as needed.
- The tube format makes reapplication easy — toss it in your beach bag, backpack, or car door.
- Works beautifully as a moisturizing base under makeup.
