The outermost layer of your skin maintains a slightly acidic film, usually cited around pH 4.7–5.5. Push that pH up and you interfere with a system, not just a number. Research on alkaline cleansing links elevated skin pH to disturbed barrier function, altered skin flora, and greater susceptibility to irritants.
What soap actually does to that pH
Traditional soap is made by saponification — fat plus an alkali (lye). The reaction consumes the lye entirely, so there's no lye left in a properly cured bar, but the resulting soap salt is inherently alkaline, typically landing around pH 9–10.
Washing with it measurably shifts your skin. Studies have found handwashing with alkaline soap can raise skin surface pH by up to about three pH units, with the effect persisting for roughly 90 minutes before your skin buffers itself back down. So if all soap is alkaline, why do some bars wreck your skin and others don't?
Because pH is one variable and it isn't the harshest one. Three things matter more day to day:
1. The surfactant doing the work
Not all cleansing agents are equally aggressive. Harsh synthetic detergents — sodium lauryl sulfate being the classic study subject — are considerably more disruptive to the barrier than the mildness of their pH alone would suggest, and the damage compounds when skin is already alkaline-shifted. A simple saponified fat is a gentler cleansing agent than a foaming-agent cocktail engineered for lather volume.
2. What the bar leaves behind
This is the real story of a tallow bar. Handmade soap made with excess fat — "superfatting" — doesn't convert every bit of fat into soap. The leftover fatty acids stay in the bar and deposit on your skin as you wash, and saponification naturally produces glycerin, a humectant that commercial manufacturers frequently extract and sell separately. Tallow contributes fatty acids that closely resemble those in your own sebum, which is the same reason tallow works as a moisturizer at all.
So the honest framing isn't "our soap doesn't disturb your pH." It's: our soap disturbs your pH like all soap does, then leaves behind lipids your skin recognizes, so it recovers faster and doesn't feel stripped.
3. How often, how hot, how long
Frequency and water temperature do more damage than most people credit. Long hot showers and repeated washing strip lipids faster than any single bar choice, and skin needs time between washes to re-acidify.
What about syndet bars? (The fair comparison)

What a syndet bar generally doesn't do is deposit sebum-like lipids as it cleans, and its ingredient list is usually considerably longer and less recognizable. That's the trade: pH-friendliness on one side, ingredient simplicity plus lipid replenishment on the other. Which matters more depends on your skin — and reasonable people land in different places.
The practical routine that beats the bar debate
- Turn the temperature down. Lukewarm, not hot. Hot water strips lipids efficiently and feels great doing it.
- Shorten the contact time. You don't need to lather every square inch every day. Wash what needs washing.
