Natural Sun Protection: What Actually Works (and What's Just a Vibe)

Natural sun protection that actually works, ranked by how much UV it keeps off your skin: shade during the 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. peak, then dense clothing with a wide-brim hat and UV-rated sunglasses, then a broad-spectrum zinc oxide sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, applied in a shot-glass amount and reapplied every two hours. Coconut, olive, carrot seed and raspberry seed oils are not sun protection (the best of them measured about SPF 8 in a lab, and far less on a real arm), a white cotton tee is roughly SPF 7, and a homemade zinc recipe has no way of telling you its SPF at all. People searching "natural sun protection" are usually one of two people: someone who wants a filter that sits on top of the skin instead of soaking in, or someone who just watched a video claiming coconut oil is all the sunscreen anyone needs. This post is for both of you. One of you is going to like it more than the other.
What counts as natural sun protection, and what's just a label
Sunlight doesn't care about your ingredient philosophy. Ultraviolet light reaches you in two flavors: UVB, which burns the surface, and UVA, which goes deeper and does the slow damage you don't see for a decade. Real sun protection has to handle both, every time you're out there.
So "natural" isn't a protection category, it's a shopping preference. In the United States, sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug, and only two of the permitted filters are minerals: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Everything else sold as natural sun protection is either behavior (shade, timing), a barrier (fabric, hats, lenses) or a botanical oil with an SPF number attached by someone who never tested it on skin.
One thing is worth saying plainly, because it costs us something to say it: zinc oxide is not natural the way tallow or olive oil is natural. Nobody digs it up and stirs it into a balm. The zinc in our tin is Z-Cote, a pharmaceutical-grade powder made by BASF to a controlled particle size, because that is the only way to get a predictable SPF. If your definition of natural means "came off an animal or out of the ground and went straight into the jar," no sunscreen qualifies, including ours. What a mineral sunscreen gives you is a filter that stays on the surface instead of soaking into your skin. That's the real distinction, and it's enough. It doesn't need dressing up as "chemical-free," a phrase that describes nothing on Earth, zinc oxide included.
Is there such a thing as natural sun protection?
Yes, and the most effective kinds never touch your skin at all. Shade and clothing physically keep photons off you. Mineral sunscreen is the natural-adjacent option for the skin you can't cover. Botanical oils are where it goes off the rails.

1. Shade and timing (the free tier, and it wins)
The American Academy of Dermatology's rule is almost embarrassingly simple. The sun's rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and if your shadow is shorter than you are, go find shade. No product. No reapplying. No cast.
The data backs this up harder than most sunscreen brands would like. A 2011 analysis of 2,338 American adults from the national NHANES survey (Linos and colleagues, Cancer Causes Control) found that people who regularly sought shade had 30% lower odds of multiple sunburns in a year, and people who wore long sleeves had 27% lower odds. Frequent sunscreen users had no such advantage. If anything they burned slightly more often, likely because sunscreen is what people use to justify staying out longer, applied at a third of what the label assumes. The authors concluded that shade and clothing "may be more effective than sunscreen, as typically used by Americans." We sell sunscreen. That sentence still belongs at the top of this list.
2. Clothing, hats and sunglasses
Fabric is the most underrated sun protection there is, and it's where the numbers get wild. According to the AAD, a long-sleeved denim shirt provides an SPF of about 1,700. A white cotton t-shirt provides about 7. Same category, a two-hundred-fold difference. The variables are weave density (tight beats loose), color (dark or bright beats pale) and moisture (dry outperforms wet). If you want a number on the label, look for a UPF rating, the clothing equivalent of SPF, which is measured rather than guessed.
Add a hat with a real brim, the kind that shades your ears and the back of your neck and not just your forehead, and sunglasses labeled for UV protection. Wraparound frames beat aviators because light comes in from the sides.

3. Mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide) for the skin you can't cover
Here's where we come in, and here's where the numbers start. Dermatologists recommend SPF 30 at minimum because it filters about 97% of UVB. Going higher buys you a percentage point or two, which evaporates the moment you under-apply. And everyone under-applies. The AAD's targets are about an ounce, a full shot glass, for the exposed body, and about a teaspoon for face and neck, reapplied roughly every two hours and after swimming or sweating.
Zinc oxide is the mineral filter worth caring about because it covers UVA and UVB on its own. A correction to most of the internet, some older writing on this blog included: zinc doesn't work by reflecting UV "like a tiny mirror." A 2016 paper in Photodermatology, Photoimmunology & Photomedicine (Cole, Shyr and Ou-Yang) measured it. Metal oxide filters reflect or scatter only about 5% of incoming UV; roughly 95% of the protection comes from absorbing it, the same job chemical filters do. What differs is where. Non-nano zinc particles are too large to pass into skin, so they do their absorbing on the surface and wash off in the shower. That's the natural advantage, stated accurately: on top of you, not in you.

4. Kitchen oils as "natural SPF" (the vibe tier)
This is the part that gets people burned, literally. The claim that coconut, olive, carrot seed or raspberry seed oil has a meaningful SPF traces back to lab studies that measured how much UV the oil absorbs in a spectrophotometer. The most-cited one, Kaur and Saraf in Pharmacognosy Research (2010), put olive and coconut oil at around SPF 8, castor oil about 6, almond about 5, sesame about 2. In a cuvette. Not on a human. Nobody in that study got sunburned for science.
Why that number doesn't survive contact with a beach: in-vitro SPF assumes a perfectly even film of a measured thickness, it says nothing about UVA, and oils don't stay put. Rub coconut oil on your shoulder and you've got a thin, uneven, sweat-mobile layer whose real-world protection is closer to nothing than to 8. The raspberry seed number comes from the same kind of lab estimate. And even at face value, an SPF 8 that never gets reapplied is a fraction of an SPF 30 applied properly. The AAD draws its line at 30 for a reason.

The recipes aren't reckless so much as unknowable: without a tested formula you can't know whether the zinc dispersed evenly, what SPF you ended up with, or whether it survives the first wave. How to build a natural sun protection routine that holds up
Stack the layers in order of how much they do, and let sunscreen be the last one rather than the only one.
- Before you go out: check the UV index and the clock. If you can shift a run, a hike or yard work out of the 10-to-2 window, you've done more than any product will.
- Getting dressed: long sleeves in a dense, dark or bright weave, a wide-brim hat, UV sunglasses. Covered skin needs nothing else.
- Zinc on the rest: face, neck, ears, backs of hands, tops of feet. Shot glass for a full body, teaspoon for face and neck. Warm a balm between your fingers so it spreads instead of dragging.
- Every two hours, and after water: reapply. Water resistance of 80 minutes means 80 minutes. Retreat to shade at peak anyway.

The honest limits (read this before you buy our tin)
Mineral sunscreen has real trade-offs, and calling it natural doesn't erase them. Zinc leaves a white cast, and the deeper your skin tone, the more it shows; our tin uses cacao powder and warm-toned sea buckthorn oil to soften that cast, not to make it disappear. It's heavier than a chemical lotion, because it's a balm of tallow and butters carrying about a fifth of its weight in mineral powder. And it does nothing for the skin you didn't put it on, which is most of the skin people burn.
